We’ve used this product around our home and garden in the past because we have dogs, chickens, and rabbits (and sheep in the paddock). Plus, we’ve got young kids as well. We wanted to be sure that the weed killers we used would be safe for our pets and kids, and also for around the vegetable garden. This product has only natural ingredients and it does seem to work well. To be honest, however, I’ve stopped using all products like this now and have opted to just pull weeds by hand, dig them out with a trow, pour boiling water on them, or use my weed eater. I decided I didn’t want to be adding any type of poison, natural or not, to my home and garden. I really care about the bees in particular so believe it’s safer to avoid them all now.

Corn gluten is a pre-emergent herbicide, meaning that it works on germinating plants to stop them from sprouting. It’s made primarily of natural protein from the endosperm of corn kernels and is a by-product of ethanol manufacturing. This weed killer prevents weeds from germinating in your yard, but it must be applied in early spring before weeds start to sprout. Once used, it will work for six weeks. If you are planting a new lawn or bare seeding spots, make sure to use it at least six weeks before grass seed. The corn gluten will stop your grass seed from germinating just like it does weeds.

Vinegar is suitable for almost anything, including killing weeds. It damages weeds quickly and is most effective when used on young weeds. Horticulture vinegar is made specifically for gardening and contains a higher concentration of acetic acid than household vinegar. While this concentration will affect most plants, it may be better for broad leave plants than on grasses. It also does better with immature seedlings than mature weeds. It is also best to use vinegar in dry climates. As soon as you see the weeds use the vinegar on them. You can also mix the vinegar with dish soap to better adhere to the plant.

Citrus oil is, also known as D-limonene, is the active ingredient in many eco-friendly household cleaners because of its ability to cut through grease and grime. It works just as well on weeds. It deteriorates the waxy coating that helps them retain moisture. Made from the main ingredient found in essential citrus oils, it is an effective weed killer when diluted with compatible ingredients. While it can be pretty costly, many have found that mixing citrus essential oils with vinegar, water, and dish soap works well.

I must say, I was surprised at this product. I tried the normal glyco Roundup and all the weeds laughed at me. Using this more environmentally friendly version, the weeds were wilting within hours and most have now died back. As it quickly breaks down in soil this is a much more friendly version and it works even on brambles, ivy and bindweed. Definately recommend.

Earthborn Elements Borax Powder includes just versatile borax, which may be used to kill weeds, manage pests, and enhance laundry detergent. Borax, an acronym for sodium borate, is a natural mineral found in dry locations such as Death Valley, California. To use, mix 10 ounces of borax with 1/2 cup of hot water until the powder dissolves. Pour the solution into 2 1/2 liters of water to dilute it further before spraying it manually on weeds with a spray container or pump-type garden sprayer. Because borax is nonselective, like many other natural weed killers, spray weeds only on a calm day to prevent damaging beneficial plants.
