Trans people are still struggling with acceptance and love in their own families even though it is the second decade of the 21st century. However, we believe part of that lack of acceptance can come from ignorance and lack of understanding.
These books provide a way for people with limited understanding of transgenderism to gain an appreciation that love and acceptance is the most important thing to a transgender family member. Be sure to check them out!
#1 The Fertility Doctor’s Guide to Overcoming Infertility by Mark P. Trolice
A quote from the book: Reproductive technology now allows more family building options for the LGBTQ community than ever before. Whether by IUI, IVF, surrogacy, donor egg, or donor sperm…it all comes down to the core belief that every person and couple deserve fertility care.

#2 Red: A Crayon’s Story by Michael Hall
Although this book doesn’t come out and specifically say transgender (it’s a story about crayons), the themes woven throughout the picturebook are poignant and relatable to anyone who has ever been told they were something that they weren’t. It’s wonderful because it’s a delicate way to address something complicated and it teaches children (and adults) tolerance, but also to look beyond their own narrowed expectations.

#4 Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out by Susan Kuklin
This book beautifully combines photographs of transgender and gender netural teens and their families alongside open and frank conversations with the youths about their gender expression. I’ve rarely seen such a thoughtful, respectful project so gorgeously published, and Kuklin’s Beyond Magenta is just that (and, I’ll add, the perfect book to give families).

#6 It Feels Good to Be Yourself by Theresa Thorn
A picture book that introduces the concept of gender identity to the youngest reader from writer Theresa Thorn and illustrator Noah Grigni.
See Noah Grigni, illustrator of IT FEELS GOOD TO BE YOURSELF, talk about the book in this Facebook post from Dec. 14 – on the OurShelves Facebook page – I hope you can see it!
OurShelves was founded last year by queer mom of two Alli Harper – it is not only a subscription book box service for children, but it is also an advocacy effort to recognize diverse authors and bring more diversity into the children’s book publishing industry – books that feature LGBTQ+ characters and families, and other traditionally underrepresented families in kids books.”
